Abstract: This study attempts to assess the practices and challenges of training programs at Global Insurance Company Share Company in Addis Ababa. To this end, primary sources are consulted to get the necessary information for the research. Questionnaires were distributed to samples of employees of the company. In addition, a semi-structured interview also held with the appropriate manager of the company. The data received were analyzed both qualitatively and quantitatively by using content analysis and descriptive statistics. The result of the study discovered that the company training plan not aligned with strategic business plan of the company. It is also found that the company doesn’t allocate enough budgets for implementing training program. The study result also showed that inadequate need assessment, no specific, measurable and time targeted objectives are practiced, and no position for separate department that is responsible for human resource training in the organization structure. The study recommended that GIC should align the training plan with the strategic business plan and communicate the training policy to employees in order to enhance and customized training programs based on its requirement, training practice should be supported by separate department that is responsible for human resource training, extensive need assessment and an equitable selection criterion should be exercised, allocate enough budget and develop clear evaluation criteria and performance measurement system before and after training.
