Abstract: This paper aims to determine the effects of design change on construction project performance located in Addis Ababa. Participants of the study, located in Addis Ababa were G1 contractors, G1 consultants, and clients. To achieve the objective of the study, an explanatory quantitative research design was used. Data was collected using a structured questionnaire. Hypotheses were also tested on a sample of 119 respondents from the client, consultant, and contractor sides. Out of 140 distributed, giving a valid response rate of 85%. Data were analyzed by using Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) V.20 to conduct descriptive and inferential statistics. For the descriptive statistics frequency, mean, standard deviation, and RII Were performed. For the inferential statistics correlation and multiple regression were performed to answer research objectives. From the descriptive statistics, the top three causes of design change were identified as “change requested by the owner”, “poor communication between contracting parties” and “error and omission” were identified. The top three effects identified were “delay in the project”, “increase in project cost” and “demolition and rework” were identified. Correlation analysis was conducted to analyze the relationships between variables; the correlation matrix revealed that all coefficients of correlation independent variables were positive and strongly correlates with the dependent variable. In addition to correlation analysis, further regression analysis was also conducted and results revealed that the three independent variables (client related, consultant related and contractor related design change factors) affect project performance. Consultant related factors were identified to be the major factors affecting project performance.
